Old Brentwoods made the journey up to sunny Clacton to face the 2nd XV in first round of the John Alder Cup. Conditions were perfect for rugby with the ground very firm underfoot. Old Brentwoods took a twenty one strong squad of players up to Clacton, each of them brimming with energy and a chance to face a new opponent.

Kick off, Old Brentwood’s receiving the kick and the forwards making ground up and across with pitch with hard running lines from Will Mead and Ed Gooday. With progress slowed Barry O’Connor sped play up with the forwards moving play down the left flank of the pitch and the ball spread quickly the opposite direction to Tom Bassett and fly half who released the back line at real pace. With the ball spread wide to James Sullivan through the hands of Aaron Knapp and Isaac Kibirige, we broke down the wing breaking the gain line and with an offload back to Isaac to score under the posts.

Receiving the kick once again the forwards gathered the ball, creating a stable platform to work the Clacton team from side to side with Charlie Raymond Jnr and Matt Jones putting in the hard running lines and apply the pressure. We steadily made our way up the field through good phases and shape, applying immense pressure on the defensive line, drawing a penalty scrum five meters out. Captain Aaron Knapp calling the forwards to go for the pushover try the pack pushed quickly and efficiently with the ball controlled at the back by Ed Gooday, Barry O’Connor pounced at his feet to go down for the second score of the game. Ryan Barker slotting the conversion to bring the score up to 0-12.

A rally from the restart saw the ball spread wide quickly through the hands from Matt Jones, Aaron Knapp then to Isaac to chip over the top and James Sullivan chase the ball down neck and neck with Isaac!! James finally getting to the ball just before the dead ball line and slamming his whole body on the ball to get in for the try. Following this try OBRFC stepped off the pressure allowing Clacton to get the ball and start to apply their own pressure. Making their way up to the 5 meter line, OBRFC were struggling to keep them out with Clacton moving the ball left to right they finally found a gap round the fringe of a ruck and scored a try, missing the kick.

This was the wakeup call that was needed with Isaac kicking off going shallow, the OBRFC pack weren’t ready, no real chasers and Clacton used their big forward runner to make their way up the field of play. Noticeably shaken it then took a few minutes for play to settle after a banana kick from Tom Bassett the team calmed things down with Ed Gooday stealing a line out from the back and made a marauding run towards the Clacton half. Pods now setting up either side of the ruck Charlie Raymond Snr and Dan Savage making yards and breaking the gain line once again. The half ending 5-21.

Kick off to the second half with OBRFC now kicking to Clacton, substitutions at half time brought on Ian Bowyer at back row and Rhys Newton on at full back. The chase was good with Will Mead and Matt Jones applying pressure on the opposition pack. Clacton with good possession of the ball made yards up the pitch, after several phases the game slowed and OBRFC got a turnover at the breakdown. The ball as then spread wide again, but the defence was solid and little yards were made. Aaron Knapp received the ball and changed the direction of play, bouncing a player and getting tackled in the opposition 22. Ball was clean and distributed to the forwards pods running hard lines back at Clacton, at the breakdown numbers were limited and the referee called a penalty for not releasing at the ruck. Clacton cleared their lines and move into the OBRFC half.
Following this play further substitutions were made with Sim Kooper and Dave Ginnaw coming on for James Sullivan and Aaron Knapp representatively. A big steal from the back of the line out from Ed we made back the 20 yards we had previously lost as he drove forward, quick ball yet again released the back with the ball spread out to Sim Kooper who hit a great diagonal line across from the left flank making 35+ yards only being stopped 5 meters out. With the pack catching up it was Isaac who pounced on the ball, stepping his way over line for the score.

With OBRFC receiving the ball again, Clacton raised their game and applied pressure for several minutes pinning the visitors in their own 22. A collision around the ruck caused an injury to prop forward Dan Sav, with Johnny Janes stepping up and taking over duties Josh Turrell came on as the replacement along with Zach Yeldham to the wing for Senna Ahmet. The change of players created an injection of pace around the field allowing OBRFC to again break tackles and move up the field after Johnny Janes made a stampeding run through midfield handing off 3 players before being brought down the just outside the 22.

Phases from the team slowed creating opportunities for Clacton to slow the ball at the break down more, we knew we had to change the pace again. Tom Bassett stepped up making a great line from the 10 channel down the right flank breaking a tackle offloading the Zach who made additional yards but with no support the ball was turned over. Clacton moving up the field with a kick from the fly half. Winning a lineout Clacton started to test the OBRFC defence yet again, changes were made with Aaron Knapp coming in at 9 with 10 minutes to go.

Great defensive play saw a penalty at the break down and the ball was spread wide to Dave Ginnaw who made yards and created go forward. With a kick over the top from OBRFC and a return from Clacton Sim Kooper gathered the ball then proceeded to netball pass it forward to a player retreating to an onside position, play stopped for a forward pass and scrum down. Clacton’s confidence grew in the dying minutes with yards being made up the field by the forwards and quickly releasing a winger to score in the corner despite a tackles from OBRFC’s defensive line.

Missing the conversion and play continuing for several minute the game was a stalemate in the dying minutes with no team going further than 10 meter lines either side of the halfway. The ref called time following a great game, we would like to thank Clacton RFC for their hospitality and hosting us on what was a tough day at the office. The Final Score 10-31 to Old Brentwoods RFC II’s.
