Old Brods u16 38 v 22 Sandal u16
Old Brods could only muster 13 players for the trip to sandal this week due to injuries and representative commitments but ended up playing some outstanding open rugby in difficult conditions. Brods started the game kicking off and went straight into their game plan with crunching tackles from issac cracknel and steven scott. Brods defence was up to the task and made sandal make errors resulting in a brods scrum. But this was the sandal strong point and brods struggled to hold the bigger more powerfull sandal forwards, but with the fitness and fast linespeed of this team the sandal forwards where never a real threat. Brods where putting the pressure on when Chester Butler
broke the line and scored the first of his hat trick of tries, con kicked by Chris Bell
0-7. Sandal came back strong and were trying their best to put their game on the front foot but with the wings of felix robbins and ben armitage, there was no way through. The ball was chipped over by sandal only for tyler nickholson to be there to return and set up butlers 2nd try, con kicked by bell 0-14. Brods where dictating the play with strong runs from Adam Roebuck
and matt smith setting up the platform for ben sumner to gift the ball to bell who went on attack with Greg Roper
in support and butler scoring his 3rd try, con kicked by bell 0-21. Brods did not have it all their own way and after some unusal missed tackles the strong sandal centre went in to score, con kicked 7-21. Brods reply was immediate and with camerron wroot taking the ball at pace and ploughing down field, quick ball out to the wing allowed armitage in for a try, con missed 7-26.
Second half started with the sandal team throwing everything at the brods, this was their best part of their game, scoring a couple of tries bringing them back into the game, 22-26. Brods were not having any of this and once they got adjusted to the heavens opening and torrential rain belting down they found their game back. James Krishnapillai
being his usual nuisance to the opponents disrupting everything, allowed the brods to get the flow back and roper went in for a great team try, con missed 22-31. This seemed to take the spirit out of the sandal team and the brods fitness started to show with the final passage of play allowing sumner to score in the corner , con kicked by bell taking the final score to 22-38 to brods.
A great game and a big thanks to sandal who although had a full squad opted to play 13 a side and give everyone a great game to watch.
Man of match goes to camerron wroot who was outstanding all day long and really put himself about the field.
Big hitter goes to felix robbins for playing out of his normal position in the forwards and playing on the wing with big tackles aplenty.
