U11's Big Win in Littleborough

by Darren Stega Jones

Continuing their run of good form, Old Brod’s, who played 1 short for much of the game, overcame a determined Littleborough side, and a wet pitch, to run in 6 unanswered tries on the weekend.

While the early stages were hard fought, Brod’s soon began to get on top and after Ben Stringer was held up over the line, Liam Stapely, playing scrum half for the day, was able to go over from the resulting scrum. A second try for Ben Stringer soon followed and as half time approached Brod’s forwards got on top with good drives from among others, Josh Clegg and Sam Hoy who came close to a try himself with a strong run to the corner. The resultant forward pressure led to a scrum near the Littleborough line from which Ben Stringer, changing his angle of attack well, was able to go over for his second try of the game.

The 2nd half saw Brod’s playing up the slope but determined tackling from both forwards and backs ensured that Littleborough had few chances and Brod’s were still able to play much of the game in the opposition half. Brod’s fourth try in fact came courtesy of a kick ahead by Ben Stringer from which James Stega-Jones, following up quickly, was able to charge down the attempted clearance and drop on the ball over the Littleborough line.

More good forward play then led to the 5th try, scored by Tom Ashton who wrestled the ball free from a maul close to the line, twisted and plunged over. Much of the remainder of the 2nd half was taken up by a series of line outs as players tried to find space on what was a narrow pitch and in the face of determined defence.

The final try of the day went to liam stapley who from a scrum won against the head on half way was able to drive through a number of tackles to force his way over; Ben Stringer made it 6 out of 6 with the conversion to make the final score 42-0 and earn the Brod’s team a well earned bath.
