Brods gain 4 try bonus point

Report by Richard Turner

Brods reaffirmed their top 6 aspirations with a confidant display over a competant Morpeth side securing a rare bonus point in their 12th victory of the campaign. This young Brods side are by no means the finished article and continue to secure victories whilst developing as an all round rugby team.

Morpeth started well after their long journey from Northumbria .For the first 20 minutes playing down the slope they dominated territory and possession securing the opening score through a neat move, centre Mooney putting left winger Wotherspoon clear on the left for an unopposed run in and a conversion comfortably kicked by fly half Matty Jinks after just 7 minutes play. Jinks missed an opportunity to extend the visitors lead with a missed penalty goal attempt following a Brods infringement at a ruck however made no mistake with a second attempt from a similar position after 17 minutes play. With the score at 10-0 Brods had hardly had a touch of the ball however on their first visit to the visitors 22 Hoyle stole lineout ball and from an almighty forward drive Scrimshaw touched down wide on the left leaving Akroyd with a difficult conversion which he struck superbly to reduce the points difference back to 3. From the restart Brods increased the tempo with strong ball carries featuring Rob Jennings , Olly Ackroyd and Ben Hoyle. From a scrum in their own half the ball squirted out however Scrimshaw was able to control and put Joe Armitage into enough space to draw defenders and put Liam Scott clear, Scott’s well timed pass brought Marshall onto the ball at pace and with a well struck chip the right winger beat the full back and covering defenders to the ball for an excellent try on the 25th minute. Akroyd’s conversion was wide however Ian Armitage’s men had taken the initiative and the lead 12-10.Brods continued to pressurise till half time and Morpeth welcomed the half time break in order to regroup.

Play continued with Brods securing good ball from scrum and lineout , the visitors could not match the enthusiastic defence of the home pack and were forced into defending their line and were lucky to escape as the home pack powered over the line from another surging maul however the referee judged the ball to be help up. Matty Hoyle went close on the wing however a forward pass was judged. Eventually after 17 minutes of the second half Brods were pressing the visitors line in the right hand corner. from the rolling maul Hoyle detached himself and his speed off the mark beat the defence to extend the lead to 17-10. Akroyd extended the lead when a Morpeth defender was penalised for not releasing and Brods were coasting at 20-10. The high ball was proving to be difficult for the Morpeth defenders with captain Holbrough making his mark on the visitors full back with a huge hit in midfield following one take and when fly half Nick O’Connor tested the defence again with huge up and under Liam Scott was chasing to field the ball on the bounce from the unnerved defenders and raced to the line unopposed to touch down under the posts. Akroyd’s conversion extended the lead and the try secured a welcome bonus point.

The score remained 27-10 at the final whistle

The result lifts Brods back to 5th position in the league and with a home game in prospect next weekend against Carlisle , the Woodhead men will be looking to continue their development with further victories in this learning curve of a season.

In an all round good day for the Woodhead men the club fielded four sides again with defeats away at Hull in the premiership for the seconds and for a very youthful 3rds at home to Bramley however the Beavers travelled to Leodiensians to play their 2nd XV/ development side and come way with a 31-26 victory.
