Lawrence Seaman Earns First Man of Match

Brods earned their first win of the season today through controlling possession, especially in the ruck and playing with the ball for around 60% of the game. When they didn’t have the ball they competed hard at the breakdowns, turning some ball over and harassing their opponents forcing errors. The communication was much more effective this week and it was good to hear it on the touch line. The link between backs and forwards was also much better, Ben being more assertive about when he wanted the ball and directing the wrap arounds.

Two quick rucks and a break right sent Captain Underpants on a 40 yard burst for his first of three on the day. Lawrence fielded a high ball mid pitch and weaved his way back up field sending Dan on a strong run. Two more rucks with Dougy Fishmonger slithering through like a Conger Eel, handing on to Desperate Dan again who finished his first of four on the day. Onward, and a few more phases, Rhys ran straight enough from scrum half to interest the defenders putting in a well timed pass for Underpants’ second. Rhys continued some good play pressurising our opponents on their ball as did Harry who was also quickly up. York came back and cleared their lines. The chasing Lawrence, who was playing a stint for York chased well, got a nice bounce as Joe’s underpants came down, skinning the Brods captain and leading to some interesting changing room banter. I checked with Loz’s dad and it counts towards his seasons tally and an extra portion of supper tonight!

Tom made a nice break and almost added to last weeks try. Doug, chased a long way back to retrieve a monster kick …. great desire and effort, Swiff and Ed had strong drives, Swiff in particular was instrumental in turning over quite a bit of York ball, staying on his feet and scooping it up like a Henry vacuum cleaner. Undies finished the half with another long run up the right making half time 7-31.

Second half brought a couple of player changes and started a bit scrappily, but Will did make a couple of break outs to settle things down. Our tackling lead by Swiff was pretty good supported by Dan, Midge and Loz, but York broke blind and ran purposefully to score. A double scissors allowed Undies to make ground, handing on to Loz who finished …. this time for Brods! Dan finished the game strongly, keeping going to the end showing the benefit of a Summer in the gym, with two further tries following good interplay between backs and forwards.

A good work out for both teams on a hot day and good to get a win on the board for the season. Man of the Match this week was Loz, scoring for both sides, having a few weaving runs and a couple of high balls to contend with.
