U16s - Whitwam Bang!
Bolton 19 Old Brodleians 29
When these two teams meet we’re generally in for a good spectacle of rugby played in great spirit and today was no exception. There was 2 inches less snow for this game than the last meeting in January and 15 degrees more warmth but a burst of rain in the first half lead to a greasy ball and one or two handling errors.
However we were out of the blocks quickly showing our attacking intentions and when an attack seemed to have broken down on the right, the ball found Dan on the wing, he puffed out his cheeks, made ground, cut nicely in and then out on his way to a powerful 40 metre score. Bolton came back in to it, firstly with a nice handling movement to level it, and then charging down our clearance attempt and touching it down to take the lead. We then lost Will for a bit with a sore knee, but after a bit of freeze spray and wobble down the touchline he came back on and tackled like a demon for the rest of the game. Tom H had a strong surging run beneath the sticks being held up one stride short of the line, where are those Mr Tickle arms when you need ‘em? But this sustained pressure lead to a series of recycled break downs and Ed W made the line. Ed’s first try for the team in the 4 years he’s been with us, a popular score and just reward for someone who week after week makes the hard yards for the team. Mum was chuffed too! We ended the half falling behind though to a score in the corner.
Second half, now in glorious sunshine, we were able to score three unanswered tries, take back the lead and ultimately the game. The first came from a series of quick rucks creating space for Captain Underpants to score in the corner. Underpants had a couple of good runs as did Rhys sniping from scrum half. However, after a bit of messy arm wrestling, we managed to give the backs a run in some space, nice passing between Underpants, Edward joining the line from the blind side finding Tom G who pinned his ears back and galloped in. Our final score came from a kick and chase with Underpants winning the race to touch down.
Hopefully a game and a result that will give us some confidence for our last match of the season next week at home to Sheffield.
