Fabulous Commitment v Cleck

Cold, wet sleety weather welcomed Cleckheaton to Woodhead this week. Despite the atrocious conditions both teams got on with playing some committed rugby and were a credit to their clubs. This was particularly pleasing for the Brods who really upped their game after last weeks defeats by York and West Park Leeds.

From the kick off Rohaan Aftaab instigated a powerful drive which almost took him to the try line. From the resulting ruck Joe Swiffen was on hand to pick up and drive over from close range. A few missed tackles from cold, wet fingers allowed Cleck back in to the game with 3 tries. However from good field position Ben Beverley pulled a try back for the home side with a gliding run to the corner and a strong finish to take the opposition tackler over the line.

In the second game Brods fell behind but always looked threatening. Their forwards through Dan Briggs, Benjamin Wilkinson, Douglas Bull, Swiffen and Aftaab were playing more as a cohesive unit winning plenty of rucks and mauls. This paved the way for breaks from Freddie Woodhouse and Matthew Holden. From a ruck close the Cleck line, cheeky scrum half Rhys Pope was able to dive over for his first try of the season. Wingers Max Sheard and Joe Midgley made some important tackles before Swiffen levelled the scores popping out of a maul to twist and touch down. Brods had the bit between their teeth and went looking for the win. Again this came from the forwards through Aftaab surging for the line.

All the boys deserve medals this week for playing with fabulous commitment in the cold, wet conditions. You all put the weather out of your minds and were a credit to your club.

• The Coaches Player of the Week was Freddie Woodhouse – made tackle after tackle with several sything breaks.
• The Parents Player of the Week was Rohaan Aftaab – strong and uncompromising running.
• The Players Player was Benjamin Wilkinson – upped his game, got stuck in with the other forwards, great attitude practising his tackling when waiting for his game.
