Old Cats put 8 tries on Merton to take home bonus point Victory!
Freddie Page doubles up at the VP Lunch 13/01/18
Players, Coaches, members, supporters and old friends of the club met for a successful VP Lunch on the first rugby weekend of 2018, with some magnificent Old Cats victories to compliment the day.
The 1st XV went up against Merton who proved to be a difficult opponent on the away leg at the start of the year having put 27 points on us. However, this was old news now and Cats were keen to keep their try line clean this time round.
The conditions were going to be a challenge having had some adverse weather in recent weeks, but nevertheless Cats managed to stay strong in defence, and prolific in attack. There were an array of point scorers in the game, most notably old Caterham School boy Freddie Page forcing his way over from the number 8 position on more than one occasion! More points came from the forwards in the shape of Conor Neary, who grabbed a try from the front row adding a try to his tally this season, alongside some well work tries in the backs from fellow John Fisher School old boys, Zach Uddoh, and George Nye; who both took up post on the wings.
Tries also came from Skipper Davidson, (who added 3 conversions to his count against Merton), substitute Ben Carter going over the line for the first time this season, and full-back Matt Maynard breaking the white line yet again.
Special mention to Daniel Birchmore who was awarded man of the match, and put in a solid performance from the front row, disrupting the opposition pack, and proving difficult to handle throughout.
Cats now have a week off before going Away to Old Glynonians, who we have already beaten once this season, looking to make this another victory to compete for that top spot in the league table. Glyns sit 8th in the table with Cats in the top three, but like any game of rugby this is not going to be easy.
