This Saturday sees the first 1st XV league match against Widden Old Boys for 14 years! The 2nd XVs are also facing off in Reserve League action.

In his column in the citizen this week, Andy Deacon sums it up perfectly:

"This week we see the car park derby between Old Cryptians RFC and Widden Old Boys which has not been played for 14 years. The two clubs are literally 10 yards apart so they have had a few issues over the years! You could only have that somewhere like Gloucester.

There is so much tribalism here and it is just one of several derbies which are all about bragging rights. It will be a very physical match and I’m sure there will be a lot of blood, sweat and boots flying round.

As the away team Widden will be closing their clubhouse for an hour after the match to make sure all the players and supporters meet in the same bar which is a brilliant gesture and really encapsulates the spirit of rugby."

The 2nd XV Reserve League match between the two clubs will kick off at 13:30, with the 1st XV Gloucester 1 League encounter following straight after at 15:00. The club with the most aggregate points at the end of the two games will win The Memorial Shield.

It is also our reunion day, so the club will be open from midday for anyone who has had any connection with the club over the years to come down and reminisce over a beer or two.

The matches will be keenly-contested, so it makes for an epic day!
