Youth Rugby Selection Policy

The selection policy below outlines the general criteria used by Age Groups for selection.

Old Ethamians support England Rugby's Age Grade Rugby initiative and our selection policy is in line with best practice from the guidance documentation.

Player Streaming:
The streaming of players within an age group into graded squads (such as A and B teams) based on perceived ability is an issue. The RFU believes that this, especially at primary school ages, is not inclusive or within the game’s ethos and values.

Every effort should be made to ensure that all children and young people are provided with equal opportunities to play, train and develop alongside their peers in an open and transparent manner.

Some coaches are too quick to substitute good coaching and teamwork development for streaming of players. This does not mean that there should be no differentiation based on merit, attendance and development, but does mean that players being given equal opportunities to play and compete should be prioritised.

However at all times it is at the Head Coach's discretion to pick the appropriate team to play for specific matches, especially with child welfare in mind.

From Under 12s and upwards the age groups move into Streamed Rugby and play in knock out competitions and leagues. Here the squad and fixtures will be rotated to ensure all players get equal opportunities and game time. This will also mean that for key games such as county finals there will be a focus on winning games.

Any queries about this should be addressed to the Age Group Head Coach or the Clubs Coaching Coordinator Ben Crabtree.
