Gavin Lach hailed his side’s ‘exceptional’ performance last Saturday which left OEs one bonus point victory away from booking their play-off place.

The Old Boys ran in seven tries on the way to an emphatic 55-12 victory at Cinderford, the third time in the last four games they have run up a half century of points, breaking the 1,000 point barrier for the season for the first time in the club’s history.

It was also the first time Cinderford have conceded more than 50 points in 10 years of National League rugby and their heaviest ever league defeat at home.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more, to be honest,” Lach said. “Cinderford is such a tough place to go and win and they are a quality side, so to put 50 points on them is unbelievable, frankly.

“It certainly didn’t feel like a 50-point game especially in the first quarter when they put us under the cosh. But I thought defensively we were excellent and weathered the storm, and then when we started to secure possession and move the ball quickly we looked so dangerous out wide, as we have done all season, especially in the second half.

“It was a bruising, physical encounter in sweltering conditions and on a rock hard pitch, so there were some very tired, battered bodies in the changing room afterwards. But we achieved what we set out to do, so it was a job well done. The long trip home on Saturday night felt a whole lot better with five points under our belts!”

Lach also acknowledged the superb travelling support that made the long journey to Gloucestershire on Saturday. “On behalf of all the players and staff, I would like to say thank you to all the supporters that made the effort to get to Cinderford last Saturday - it was outstanding! In the seven years I have been in charge at the club I have never seen so many OEs on the touchline for an away game and so vocal and positive.

“Even the players that were injured or not in the match-day 20 all jumped on the coach to run water on for the boys. It was a great effort by everyone and it did make a difference!”
