The vastly experienced 29-year-old lock was club and 1st XV captain at the National One club and boasts a glittering rugby CV.
A superb lineout operator and one of the National League’s master tacticians, Kench has represented England Under-18s and Loughborough University, during which time he captained England Students.
He went on to win two Blues at Oxford University in 2008 and 2009, before enjoying a short spell in the Premiership with Sale Sharks under the direction of Kingsley Jones, and then in the Championship with Nottingham.
He arrived at Esher in 2011 and was a real driving force during his five seasons there, helping them to second place in National One in the 2012/13 season.
Kench, who is a county regular with Surrey, has just returned from England Counties’ unbeaten tour of Canada, where he played in all three games.
A PE Teacher at Trinity School, he arrives at College Meadow in a playing and coaching capacity and will oversee the lineouts as well as working closely alongside forwards coach Aaron Liffchak.
OEs Director of Rugby Gavin Lach said: “I’m delighted to welcome Ian to Old Elthamians RFC. To secure a player and coach of his calibre and standing in the game is a tremendous coup for this club and a real statement of intent as to what we want to achieve here.
“His experience of playing at a higher level and his expertise and knowledge will prove absolutely invaluable to us on and off the field. He will bring new ideas and impetus to the coaching set-up which can only rub off on the players as we prepare for the new season.”
