Congratulations to former Old Elthamians junior Nick Tompkins who has been called up to the England Saxons squad for the summer tour of South Africa.

The 21-year-old Saracens centre, who came up through the OEs mini and junior ranks at Foxbury, has scored three Premiership tries in eight appearances for the Men in Black this season, and is one of the most exciting young prospects in rugby’s top flight.

Tompkins is part of a 27-man squad that includes the likes of England internationals Kieran Brookes, Dave Attwood, Matt Kvesic, Danny Cipriani, Christian Wade, Semesa Rokoduguni and Luther Burrell who bring 69 senior caps to the squad.

He will link up as well with England's World Cup-winning flanker and Saracens legend Richard Hill who has been named as Team Manager for the tour.

Saxons head coach Ali Hepher said: “Eddie Jones has given us a strong development squad to take on a South Africa A side. The squad has a good mixture of experienced players and emerging talent.

“Playing South Africa twice in South Africa is going to be a great challenge and a significant test for us but it is also an incredibly exciting opportunity for the players and management to prove themselves.

“The series will give the players international experience and will be an important stepping stone towards international honours.”

It’s the latest chapter in a meteoric rise for the Sidcup-born midfielder who has been capped by England at Under-16 and U18 level and was a key member of England’s Under-20 Junior World Championship success last summer.

Tompkins has gone from strength to strength since making his first team debut for Saracens in an LV-Cup tie against Leicester Tigers in 2012, and everyone at Old Elthamians RFC wishes him every success.
