shocked is an understatement. was my 1st coach when i made 1st team at caldy and coached me for 6 or 7 yrs. top guy, top coach, will be sadly missed.
Our thought's and prayers are with his family, I know that he helped us out behind the scenes whilst I was involved with the junior section.
Good man, rest in peace.
Played with Tony at no.10 and remember winning at Wrexham when they had a very strong team. He was an outstanding player, very commited; one of those players who you would want in your team. He would be the first at training and expect everyone else to be there with him. Even more important, he was somebody everybody got on well with.
Very sad news indeed. Thoughts and condolences to his family at their great loss. Had the great fortune to play alongside Tony in the early 70's and what a visionary player he was. A great team organiser and motivator and he dragged/propelled Oldershaw to some great wins that we wouldn't have got without him. He will be sadly missed.
Like Chris, I was coached by Tony at Caldy when I first started playing open age. He found time for everybody who wanted to play and learn to get better. There used to be 50 or more people at training but he always found a way of giving a little something to everyone - even useless third team wingers like me! He was a great inspiration and a really nice bloke.
In a roundabout way I have only just learned that Tony Atherton has passed away and would like to endorse Phil Francis' and Barry Scott's comments about Tony.
I too played in the 70's and remember being inspired by him as a player.
A great guy, didnt realise he had moved to Cheltenham.
