Successive West Country Derby Victory for Dominant Oldfield
Oldfield followed up a pleasing victory away to Thornbury last week, with another convincing display to complete the double over 2nd place Avonmouth.
After a 38-25 victory over at Barracks Lane earlier in the season, the Mouth’ turned up to Shaft Rd intent on gaining revenge to cement their ambitions to win the league but were outplayed and Oldfield eventually ended up 15-7 victors.
Oldfield, with many key personnel back in the team since the turn of the year, started the game with high energy and intensity, taking play into the Avonmouth half stretching the opposition defence as forwards and backs combined to good effect. However, a couple of penalty offences at the breakdown allowed Avonmouth to clear.
Oldfield kept on taking play back to Avonmouth who struggled to cope with the speed and conviction of the home play. However, a steal at the breakdown allowed Avonmouth to attack up the blind side from their own half and after a couple of passes, the winger took the game into the 22. Oldfield with superior pace out wide, quickly brought the attack to an end although another penalty was awarded due to a breakdown offence as Oldfield started to come to terms with the referee and his interpretations. Avonmouth opted for a lineout and from the driving lineout, the ball was transferred infield after some excellent defence and a scrum was awarded to Oldfield after a knock on. Oldfield continued to edge the gain line battle and from here, Oldfield cleared and play returned to the Avonmouth half and Oldfield continued to be very much in the ascendency and after continued pressure, brad barnes kicked a penalty after a breakdown offence in the oppositions 22 to take the score to 3-0.
When Avonmouth were in possession, forward surges were nullified and repeatedly driven back, three quarters cutting back were met with the same resistance and when the Mouth’ moved the ball wider they were never granted any space and often kicked the ball, allowing Oldfield to run the ball back with interest. From a smart lineout play Zak Ellis then put Isaac Weier away down the left hand line and he ran hard and 15m from the line he choose to chip through and the ball went into touch 5m out. Oldfield stole the lineout, one of many stolen on the day as they now dominated the lineout battle, and attacked infield and another penalty was awarded. Barnes slotted it over making the score 6-0. Again, taking the ball into the Avonmouth half, Will Owen tore through the 13 channel and half tackled, he got to his feet, offloaded and the ball was carried onwards by the forwards and coming across field; Sean Lilley carried the ball up the middle and Avonmouth committed another offence at the breakdown as Oldfield were desperate to gain quick ball to score in the corner. Barnes added the extras to make the score 9-0 and Oldfield were in total control.
Oldfield should have added to the score after Isaac Weier broke through a tackle in midfield and charged to the line, tackled 10m out some desperate counter rucking led to a penalty for Avonmouth preventing a great attacking opportunity for Oldfield to score. The clearing penalty led to a lineout, which was again stolen as Ian Thomas and Tim Lawson dominated and from the attack Lilley chipped to the corner, the clearing Avonmouth attack was caught and transferred to the left hand side and Zak Ellis burst through a gap just inside the mouth’ half and was caught 15m out, without realising flanker, Tom Ellis was on his shoulder, which would again have led to a certain score and Avonmouth again cleared after winning the ruck. Just before half time the effervescent, Rhidian Maguire, who caused the visitors all sorts of problems all afternoon, darted down the blind side and hacking through the mouth winger won the footrace 4m out and Avonmouth scrambled the ball away again, but it was all Oldfield. Despite their dominance Oldfield were 9-0 up and the score line flattered Avonmouth who were completely overwhelmed. The message at half time was simple, more of the same forget about the missed opportunities.

Avonmouth lost another line out when it was overthrown and the prestigious Maguire collected the ball and booted it 60m up field and under pressure the ball was kicked to touch and Oldfield had a lineout in the Avonmouth 22. From here, the ball was carried by the forwards who frequently got over the gain line working with great coherency and another breakdown offence was committed, as Avonmouth were under pressure and their back row forward was sent to the sin bin after repeated offences and Barnes added 3 points to take the scores to 12-0. The game followed a similar pattern as Oldfield had the edge in all phases and when flanker Tom Ellis hacked through from the half way line after a poorly controlled breakdown, he collected the ball and his inside pass came off a Avonmouth body and was collected by Olli Sacco 24m out, who was running to the line but the referee adjudged a knock on.
Avonmouth forwards huffed and puffed, but could not find any momentum and they become increasingly frustrated in the face of a resolute defence where Sam Lewis, Jacob Fields and Rich Stainer were most prominent, and the Mouth backs never penetrated and quickly run out of ideas against a well-organised and committed defensive effort. More territory was gained after a Mouth’ back was caught in possession after a high ball and a counter ruck won the ball back and from here, another penalty was awarded to Oldfield. Barnes made it 5 from 5 as Oldfield stretched their lead to 15-0. The next 10 minutes was played around the middle of the field and interrupted with some physio visits. From a blind side attack on the half way line a rather, innocuous breakdown offence, saw the excellent home second row Tim Lawson sent to bin with 9 minutes left.
Avonmouth wanting to get something from the game launched an all out attack and applied some concerted pressure on the defending 14. Up close, with 3 minutes remaining, their flanker barged over and the conversion made the score 15-7 allowing the visitors a consolation score. Oldfield collected the re-start and wound the clock down and kicked the ball out to end the game. This was a convincing victory for Oldfield who turned the screw and dominated the game for best part of 70 minutes and if a couple of excellent line breaks had been finished off, the score would have been more reflective of their superiority. The front five engine were excellent at set-piece and contributed an enormous amount around the field. The back row won the battle of the breakdown where, despite giving some early penalties, quickly adapted to the referee. The backs posed a much higher attacking threat than their counterparts and the game was managed very effectively at 8, 9, 10 and 12. With two excellent victories under their belt the Red Army can continue to roll and paint 2012 Red!!!
