Oldfield Lift the Curse of Cornwall
Oldfield made it 5 from 5 in 2012 as they sweated and toiled their way to a hard fought victory against a very determined Wadebridge Camels team.
With many players unavailable, due to the last minute postponement the week before, organizing two trips to Cornwall in a week was always going to be a challenge. With Pat Bunton and partially injured Craig Lilley the only players on the bench, several players had to step up due to so many unavailability’s.
However, despite being 10 nil down within 8 minutes, Oldfield’s Zak Ellis responded with a classy try under the posts, following some ambitious backs initiated from deep inside their own 22. A penalty from debutant Will Chilcott made it 10-10 and Oldfields defensive grit and determination came to the fore.
Some great interplay from forwards and backs saw Isaac Weier hit a line through the middle and he sneaked in the corner to score, as Oldfield opened up a 15-10 lead. The Camels regained the initiative and levelled after some good work up front and the game was interestingly poised. As the Camels forced the game a chip was charged down by, Man of the Match Josh Felix, who re-gathered the bouncing ball and sprinted in from 60 yards to score.
Wins in Cornwall don’t come that easily and Wadebridge who had previously beaten leaders Brixham at home went back on the attack. A long pass bobbled around and their winger snapped up the ball and raced clear to score in the corner. The conversion was missed from out wide and the score was locked at 20-20 with just 4 minutes to go. A penalty inside the Camels half allowed Zak Ellis to kick to the corner and with 2 minutes left, the Oldfield forwards demonstrated their composure and belief, by taking the 5 metre line out and driving the much bigger Camels pack over for the decisive try, Skipper for the day, Paddy Mills, emerged with the ball and Oldfield had secured a fine victory against the odds. FT Wadebridge Camels 20 Oldfield 25.
Oldfield’s excellent performance was underpinned by a great defensive effort allied to some clinical finishing, which meant that as the opportunities came, fine tries were scored.
This Saturday Oldfield are away at Cleve RFC.
