Oldfield Dig Deep to Secure Victory
On a thoroughly miserable winters afternoon at Shaft Road Oldfield got back to winning ways by beating 3rd place Old Bristolians in a thrilling, hard fought game.
The weather did its best to spoil a great game with both sides going hammer and tongs at each other in what the visitors would want in a forward battle! However it was the home side who, despite the conditions, tried to play their exciting expansive game.
After an attritional opening twenty minutes with the visitors continuously trying to play close to the rucks and mauls, the ball was passed back to their Stand Off who attempted to kick to touch but was charged down by Will Owen who then swooped onto the ball and darted over the whitewash with the opening score, converted by Tom Pittman.
The visitors really only had the one game plan and continued to attempt to trundle round the corners but were met by a massive defense, continuously chopping their opponents down or driving back whence they came.
After 32 minutes they managed to trundle over out wide to score the equalizing try, which was converted to make the scores level.
However just 6 minutes later Oldfield continuing to press with a more expansive game worked their way into the visitors 22, a line break by the impressive Owen, slipped the ball to returning Harry Smith who darted over for a converted try. The visitors continued with their doggedness and scored their second try, unconverted, on the stroke of half time to make it 14-12.
The weather continued to make play difficult and the visitors continued to throw everything at the home side but the defence was resolute and in the 48th minute Oldfield increased their lead with a well taken penalty from Tom Pittman.
Just 4 minutes later Old Bristolians scored their third try out wide, unconverted. Oldfield were in no mood to add yet another loss, dug deep and were rewarded when in the 75th minute Tom Pittman put a perfect rubber kick through the defence for Harry Smith to beat all defenders with blistering pace to score in the corner which turned out to be the last score of the game, indeed the winning score!
The visitors continued to crash through but Oldfield’s heroic defending held out.
All credit to both sides for a great game of rugby.
Oldfield travel to Bristol Saracens on Saturday.
