The hobbit of Old Gs steps up to the mark

He’s little, he’s a hobbit, but he’s our little hobbit. This week Dave ‘Frodo’ Owen steps up to the plate in the clubs 60 seconds regular feature. Frodo, as he is lovingly known, has been at the club for a decade now and has been a regular in the 2s and 3s over the years. He has appeared across the park but has most recently found his home at hooker in the heart of the 2nd team pack.

Despite looking like a 13 year old kid and being somewhat vertically challenged, he more than makes up for this in terms of heart and determination – getting stuck into any opposition – even when they are 4 times the size of him. A clubman at heart, when he isn’t playing he can be found raucously cheering on the 1s on the touchline – so much so that certain teams have taken a disliking to him and driven him out of their clubhouse.

He spared a minute of his time to answer a few questions.

Name: Dave ‘Frodo’ Owen

Age: 29

Position: Hooker or Back Row

Previous clubs?
Pure blood Old G!

Best Old Gs mate and why?
Paul Coomber. We looked after each other as fresh-faced teenagers on days out with the more seasoned members of the club, and we have managed to survive nearly 10 years of 2nd/3rd/4th team rugby together. A true gentleman with a heart of gold.

Favourite Old Gs rugby story?
The Kent Vase final in Aylesford around 2009/2010. Despite not getting the result we wanted, everyone had a brilliant day, and the “fun bus” journey was legendary.

Best player you have played with?
Marcus D’Cunha. I was lucky enough to play alongside Marcus a few times for the 2’s. He was simply on a different level.

Interesting fact about you?
I’m fully trained as a croupier (Casino Dealer)

Favourite film?
I couldn’t single one out. Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, The Usual Suspects, Reservoir Dogs, The Lost Boys just to name a few.

Favourite food and drink?
Rare fillet steak or a home cooked roast, and a fruity cider.

Who is your rugby hero/idol?
The Pitbull, Brian Moore and Schalk Brits, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.

Which 3 celebs would you have round for dinner?

Quentin Tarantino, because he has a bizarre but incredible mind. Dara O’ Briain, for his intelligent humour. And John Petrucci, guitarist from Dream Theatre, to do a little acoustic set.

Person you would most like to be at Old Gs and why?

If I had Mat Wilsons job, Hoody’s thighs, and JJ’s culinary skills, I would be quite happy.

Person you would least like to be at Old Gs and why?

JJ again. He’s still trying to retire but he’s still not allowed!

Which actor/actress would play you in a film about your life?

I suppose Elijah Wood makes sense...

Which 3 Old Gs players would you take on holiday with you?

Millsy, Connor, and Tyler Poulson. I couldn’t possibly go on holiday without them….they would set fire to my flat while I was gone or something!

If you won £1million what would you buy?
The huge house at the top of the hill overlooking the club, and a games room with a bar.

I love Old Gs because… of the camaraderie, the laughs, the banter, the 12 bars, the BBQ’s, the 2nd team ‘refreshment’ fridge, the socials, the rugby, and the people.
