Colts keep up winning run

A solid whole team performance on Sunday saw Old Hales Colts extend their lead at the top of the League table with a fifth win from five League matches. After four home matches this was the team’s first away trip to an always very strong Sutton Coldfield side.

The beginning of the match saw the two teams testing each other out in the middle of the pitch, but gradually Old Hales began to get on top winning the lineouts, scrums and breakdowns. The hard work paid off after 9 minutes when Jack Elliot received the ball and with great pace took the ball down the right wing to run the try in under the posts, with Luke Fenton converting 0-7.

After a further period of good rugby by both sides a superbly placed kick by Jamie Keen towards the right wing saw Jack Elliot again sprint onto the ball and run the try in under the posts. The restart did not travel and after a few reset scrums around the middle of the pitch on 19 minutes, Harrison Plumb tried a Number 8 pick and go to score straight through the middle. Luke Fenton again converted to make the score 0-21.

Following this, Sutton rallied and managed to get back into the game, and after a period of continued pressure in our 22 a penalty was conceded which they ran in by the posts and converted to make the score 7-21 at half time.

The second half started with Sutton the more alert and within a few minutes they had scored another try which was not converted, to bring the score back to 12-21. With a few injuries by now, a little nail biting had appeared within some supporters, but the strength and depth available in the squad shone through. The replacements were excellent with Old Hales regaining the upper hand and, shortly after, a further try was scored by Luke Fenton in the corner.

Another 10 minutes of pressure saw Josh Woodward go over off the back of the ruck. Further strong pressure in the 22 saw a potential try held up from a scrum on Sutton’s 5, but eventually they could not hold out and after further forwards pressure Adam Babb went over in the 68th minute to make the final score 12-38.

Youth Development Head Coach Matthew Williams said “Today I saw a group of young men become a team, 22 players all contributed to what was a fantastic team performance”
Worcester Warriors Community & Academy Coach Matthew Jones, who watched the match, said “… they looked cracking! Your coaches are clearly doing a great job…. Their back play at times with a lot of movement off the ball was great to watch…”
