Senior Mens' Match Report Saturday 10th March 2018

League: Midlands 3 West (South)
Old Leamingtonians RFC 1st XV v Bromyard RFC 1st XV
Venue The Crofts, Bericote road

Result: Old Leamingtonians RFC 1st XV 40 - 8 Bromyard RFC 1st XV

Old Leamingtonians moved into second place in the league with an accomplished display in front of a large gathering of club patrons and life members. Their brand of 15 man rugby left Bromyard in disarray. Five first half tries and three second half tries, none of which were converted, gave the home side an eight try haul and secured a valuable bonus point.

The game kicked off with OLs, playing with the wind, taking the game to the visitors and it was only a few minutes into the match when a strong drive by OLs saw second row Joe Tallamini pick up from a ruck on the visitors 5 metre line to cross for the first try wide out on the right of the field. The try was not converted.

From the kick off OLs continued to force Bromyard back into defence and another strong forward display saw Peter Nancarrow cross for the first of his two try haul. Bromyard came back into the game and began to put pressure on the home defence and it was OLs that conceded the next score when Bromyard converted a penalty, but the score reduction didn’t last long before the ball was again well won by the home forwards and speedily moved out to right wing Liam Wellings who crossed for try number three.

OLs, always the stronger side applied more pressure and had the game under control and it wasn’t long before further good forward play saw the ball moved in the opposite direction along the three-quarter line for left wing Ciaran O’Connor to cross for try number 4.

On the approach to half time try number 5 followed when more excellent forward play saw Peter Nancarrow cross for his second try of the game and move the half time score to 25 points to 3 in OLs favour.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with OLs continuing to control the game and keep Bromyard under pressure with the home forwards dominating and causing errors in the visitors defence. One such error led to scrum half Mark Foley spotting a gap to cross the goal line for try number six.

The game evened out for a spell with neither side causing any real threat until a sweeping move by OLs from just inside their own half between forwards and backs resulted in centre Simon Hemming crossing for try number seven.

Towards the end of the game, OLs again began to dominate play and within five minutes another well won ruck by the home forwards saw the ball quickly moved to fly half Henry Reynolds who cut through the retreating visiting defence to touch down try number eight.

Bromyard competed well throughout the game but were simply out played They did manage to secure an unconverted consolation try almost on the final whistle to bring about a match score of 40 points to 8 in favour of OLs.

There is no scheduled fixture for 17th March but it may be that the postponed game versus Alcester will be re-arranged for that day. If not the next game is away to Dunlop on 24th March kick off 3.0pm.
