First Game of the Season, new rules, new game, great results
Today we saw the U10s over at Kenilworth RFC for our first friendly clash of the season, and what a series of games...
Kenilworth RFC are long standing close friends of OLs, many of the players play together at school and are also part of great friendships. Today was a great example of why Rugby brings so much joy to so many and why friendships are so important.
With half the U10s over at Moseley Festival we were still able to field two full squads over at Kenilworth. The big question was whether the players were ready for the new rules, the ruck and maul, and the scrum. The games got off to a strong start and with all the players on the pitch surprising all the coaches on the touch lines, to the delight of all the parents cheering their teams. The play was aggressive, assertive and dynamic. It was great to see that the kids had not forgotten the basics, tackling was purposeful although some of the handling mistakes saw numerous turnovers that could have been avoided.
Kenilworth showed strength and powers, however OLs showed pace and great ball handling. One of the the greatest surprises seen by OLs was the support play, the kids played as a team, supporting each other, looking after each other, a clear sign of trust and friendship.
The games were very close, and the biggest learning for the coaches is perhaps to think about driving over the rucked ball, and ripping.
A big thank you to our hosts, Kenilworth RFC who once again fielded worthy opponents that uphold the rugby values.
