Butt Plugs Gap in Bowling to Take Winning Wicket

On a cold and thoroughly miserable day,the bottom of the table 1sts travelled to table topping Barwick in Elmet. Omens weren't good after our poor start to the season and also visiting last season's double cup winners and league runners up.

Typical of the Leos, we only went on to shock the league leaders in a thrilling 4 run win that had the crowd on the edge of their seat. Losing the toss, we were put in on a low slow track where scoring was clearly going to be difficult. A steady start from Butty and Shayan took us to the 13th over, but we lost both openers in consecutive overs. Guesty making his first appearance of the season, was accumalating runs nicely, determined that we would bat 45 overs and at least set a target for our bowling attack to defend.

Wickets went down steadily, but a vital 10th wicket unbeaten partnership between Guesty and Dicko took us to 152 for 9. Guesty finished on a patient, vital 61 not out, never looking in trouble. Brawick's overseas star Matthew Prosser bowled 12 superb overs of spin to finish with 5 for 21. Bizarrely, 10 Leos players hit boundaries. Only 4 got into double figures !!!

The tea time TV viewing of the BBC's coverage of Charlotte's birth was riveting, ensuring that the 20 minutes break was adhered with to the second !!!!

Barwick started their innings in unusual style. The opener walked off after 2 overs to go to work !!!! 6 for 1 after 2 with the wicket "Retired Out". Soon after Boyesy bowled an absolute jaffer to star man Prosser and cleaned him up for 2. Excellent fielding in arctic conditions meant we chipped away at the Barwick batting line up. Unfortunately Shayan's finger also chipped away (4 weeks out).

At 78 for 7 Barwick were struggling but counter attacked against our 4 man attack. Special mention to Jack "Harry" Kane for bowling 9 overs as first change on his debut. Boyesy and Dicko were superb picking up 3 wickets each. The last pair were in needing 20 to win but that came down to 5 needed. "Golden Arm" Butt bowled a banana like outswinger to take the last wicket and the Leos players all hugged each other. Not to celebrate, just to get warm. 148 all out and our first win of the season.

Next up is Wetherby at home on Saturday. Wetherby are reigning champions but leave the league after this season.

The 2nds played Wetherby 2nds at home on Saturday. An excellent knock from Steve "Racing Blogger" Dean wasn't enough as Wetherby coasted home by 6 wickets. The 2nds are away at Kippax next Saturday. It's always a surprisingly enjoyable fixture, particularly if cider is £1 a can and there is an 18th birthday party going on at the same time.
