Old Whitgiftian 17 - Old Mid Whitgiftian 13
Disappointing derby defeat as the Mids travelled to local rivals Old Whits
The Mids travelled to local rivals Old Whits which a much changed side to the previous weeks home victory against Old Georgians however despite having to play a number of players out of position were still confident that the team that was selected had enough in the locker to secure another win.
Mids started the stronger of the two teams and were awarded a large number of penalties as Whits desperately defended their line. Scrums were even contested but the Mids lineout and driving maul was proving to be a very dangerous weapon. One such lineout resulted in a driving maul from the just outside the 10 meter line well into the opposition 22 which was illegally dropped before it made its way over for a try. The reliable boot of Dan Crouch stepped up to kick the 3 points but Mids dominance should really have produced a greater lead.
Next to score was Whits in probably their first visit of the game into the Mids half with a succession of missed tackles allowing them to run through and score under the post to make the score 7-3.
From the restart Mids were again on the front foot with club debutant Ollie Case having a couple of good runs on the right wing, one of which he cut back inside broke through three tackles and converted under the post for Dan Crouch to convert.
Mids however had not learnt their lesson and allowed Whits a second visit into their half where again they seemed to have forgotten how to tackle and gifted Whits a second try to make the score 14-10.
The second half saw territory more evenly matched with both sides taking it in turn to have periods of attack. Dave Spedding was sent to the bin for 10 minutes for a deliberate knock on and during this period the 14 men of Mids dug in deep to defend their line. If only such defence could have been shown in the first half.....
Both kickers slotted a kick each to take the score up to 17-13 and that is how the match finished. Mids were deflated at the end as they knew as a team they had failed to turn up and that on another day things could have been very different. The only consolation was the losing bonus point that Mids took back to LMA.
