Old Mid-Whitgiftian 31 - Old Wimbledonians 14

On a wet and blustery Saturday, fourth placed Old Wimbledonians visited Lime Meadow Avenue to play the 1st XV, who currently sit at third in the league. After suffering a home defeat to the Mids earlier in the season, the visitors arrived looking for reve

Lime Meadow Avenue also welcomed back Jacob Bacon, who after a spell in the national leagues returned to the field as starting scrum half.

The size of the Mids pack was soon to set the tone, with the team dominating early play. The scrum was fantastic, winning ball against the head and denying Old Wimbledonians a much needed platform from which to unleash their backline. The ball was run hard, with big carries from the likes of Daniels, Shillabeer, Whitewood and Bryant dominating the visitors and testing their defence to the maximum.

This allowed Mids to score their first try just before half time, with old hand Jacob Bacon breaking from the base of the scrum, forcing his was through a ineffective opposition back row and throwing a sevensesque offload to winger Tom Webster to score in the corner.

Mids however were not off the hook, and their discipline at times left a lot to be desired; the visitors punished this by kicking a total of three penalties to goal. However they soon began to toe the line, and with the opposition losing control in the face of the referee Old Wimbledonians soon found themselves down to 14 men for a ten minute spell.

Further tries came from the pack in the second half, with Jack Whitewood trundling through to score a wonderful prop’s try and Robbie Farmer scoring too. Mids were able to completely dominate up front in the second half, no doubt partly due to the depth of their bench; with veteran back row Martin Simmo and club colossus Nathan Bacon bringing fresh legs and exciting running lines to further carve up the Old Wimbledonians defence. Skipper Ali Hall led the forwards charge from the front, and was unlucky not to be on the score sheet this week.

Dan Crouch’s kicking game was almost flawless, finding touch when needed and kicking a few penalties to make the final score a resounding 31-7 to the Mids. This means we maintain our position in third place, only three points off the second placed Old Georgians. After a cold and tough match it was time to hit the changing rooms for some George Michael songs, showers and a well earned beer.

Man of the Match went to Jacques Bryant for his complete domination as tighthead. Dick of the Day was awarded to Coach Edwards by his team, for going full ferally northern and being chastised mid match by the referee. At least he did not see red...
