Barham Athletic v Old Newton FC

Defeat on the road

Last Saturday we made another short trip down the road to play Barham, I was impressed with the way they knocked the ball about over at our place, so knew we would be in for a fight.

With the pitch very narrow and long we started the first half playing some nice football and looking comfortable although there were a few challenges going in which I can’t see how the Ref let go! We opened the scoring when Alex went through with a well taken goal, beating the defender and going past the keeper to slot home. There were a few more chances, George going close with a one on one and Cooke having an effort but couldn’t hit the target. Liam in the Newton goal didn’t really have much to do so we went in 1-0 up at half time.

With the second half starting I had only just got to the bottom of the hill when Barham scored. From what I saw a good cross wasn’t dealt with very well in our area and they scrambled it home. This seemed to give Barham a lift and they tried to press, with Austin on their wing looking dangerous they won a corner which again we didn’t deal with and they poked it home. Our lads kept playing some nice football and George was unlucky not to score when free in the box, but fired straight at the keeper. We then got the equaliser, a nice chip into the box from George found Luke Austin who guided it in. With this I wanted to press for the win because a draw was not good enough so I brought young Lewis on but it wasn’t how we both expected it to go. With his first touch he put it over Liam to give Barham the lead again, so backs against it! The lads didn’t give up, Joji kept forcing the ball forward linking up well with Niall and with 5 mins left the ball was played into the box from a quick throw for Luke to get his second. Unfortunately this didn’t last long as Barham were gifted another goal with our defence giving the ball straight to their centre forward and with an open goal Barham took the game 4- 3. Hard to take when looking at the goals we gave away on the day, but like I have always said win as a team lose as a team and at the end of the day you don’t deserve to win if you concede like that. Apart from that I was happy with the way we are moving the ball and the effort every lad put in, even when going behind. There were a number of lads that could of got MOTM but I gave it to Cooke for his hold up play up top and winning his headers well done mate.

We wish Barham good luck for rest of season, they are a good bunch of lads over there. So we move on to this weeks game at home to Stowupland and to try and put that performance behind us.
