SOUTH OUT MUSCLE THE ONS
OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS 15-31 SOUTH LEICESTER
The ONs made four changes to their starting line up for the visit of South Leicester to Billing Road.Phil Beaumont joined the long termed injured list being replaced by James Maule at no 8 and Matt Bedden returned to the second row.In the backs Dean Morgan resumed at full back and after Ollie Storey was injured in the warm up Tom Goodman came in at centre and Charlie Barker was hastily summoned from the A XV to bench alongside Ralph Rainbow and Dan Spencer.
A whole hearted and spirited display from the ONs was not enough to upset second placed South Leicester in this latest league encounter. The inexperienced and much smaller ONs pack were under pressure from the start but a strong defensive effort restricted South to a 12-8 half time lead. However the visitors used their considerable weight and size advantage to good effect after the break scoring three further tries, two from lineout catch and drives,to gain their 31-15 win.
The ONs kicked off playing down the Billing Road slope and were immediately under pressure with Kyle Coltman putting South ahead with an unconverted try from short range.Alex Rose pushed a penalty just wide but from the drop out the ONs regained possession and Matt Ireland weaved through the defence before his off load found Matt Love in support to dive over.South were dominating both territory and possession and when a drive was illegally stopped the scrum option was chosen and as the ONs were pushed backwards the referee immediately awarded a penalty try with Lord adding the two points. From the restart South infringed and Rose put over the kick and as half time approached the ONs mounted a series of attacks and South’s Nick Griffin was quite rightly yellow carded for a deliberate knock on,but the ONs were unable to take advantage as Ross Kevan was stopped just short and on the opposite side of the pitch Dean Morgan was halted by a crunching tackle which saw the ball lost forward.
Within two minutes of the resumption the visitors increased their 12-8 lead when a well executed catch and drive from a lineout saw Stuart Bale touch down and on 54 minutes the move was repeated with Bale again the scorer.Lord converted both tries, the second expertly judged from wide out,but he was unable to add the extras to South’s fifth try with Connor Smith fending off two defenders in a strong run to the line. The ONs came back and Charlie Barker made a searing 40 metre break before his pass found Dan Napier but the defence scrambled across to bring him down inches from the line.South were once again reduced to 14 when flanker March was sin binned for a blatant punch and as the game drew to a close Pete Hosking finished a multiphase attack with a try in the corner which Rose converted with a fine kick to take the final score to 31-15.
ONs:Dean Morgan,Dan Napier,Tom Goodman(Charlie Barker 55mins),Matt Love,Matt Ireland,Alex Rose,Ross Kevan,Chris McKee(Dan Spencer 63mins),James Maule,Matt Mills,Sam Howes,Matt Bedden,Aaron Butel(Ralph Rainbow 48mins),Liam Price,Pete Hosking.
Man of the Match:Matt Mills-a tireless display putting in many well timed tackles.
Next week the ONs take on Scunthorpe at Billing Road with a 2.15pm kick off
