Rishworthians throw away first half lead second week running

Match Preview Friday 9th March

RISHWORTHIANS will be looking to youth for their Yorkshire Three home game against strugglers Hessle. With skipper Gary Morris unavailable teenage scrum half Chris Cowey gets his first chance of league action against the visitors from Hull after impressing with the second team this season.

The Copley club will be delaying final selection until late because of injury doubts, but have named a similar squad to last week, although they expect to give other young players a chance to impress. At least they will not have a slope to contend with as Rishworthians did in last week's narrow win at York RI, where they made too many mistakes playing uphill and were forced to regroup and grind out a win in the final minutes after going behind.

Match Report Saturday 10th March - Yorkshire 3

RISHWORTHIANs almost threw away a Yorkshire Three game away in the second half for the second week running, with a flurry of points coming in the last 15 minutes. They would have succeeded had it not been for the thickness of the upright which denied Hessle a conversion with the last kick of the match. Last week they managed to sneak a one-point win at York RI, but this time had to settle for a draw but did manage to gain a bonus point for scoring four tries.

While they had six first team regulars missing, including both halfbacks, they still should have beaten strugglers Hessle and at 17 - 0 at half-time looked to be well on the way. But somehow in the second half their game almost completely collapsed. They looked to have little cohesion, made mistake after mistake and their normal solid defence was in tatters with some poor tackling.

It looked so good in the first half and they were constantly on the attack. They opened the scoring early, flanker Luke Illingworth charging the ball down and lock Ryan Mudd gathering and crashing over. Stand-off Joe Billing converted.

They put together some good rugby with forwards and backs linking well, with Mudd and flanker Fraser Swarbrook prominent. It forced a lineout near the home line and prop Reuben Pollard was quickly through to charge down a clearance kick and touch down.

Rishworthians kept up the pressure and eventually the third try came after both Swarbrook and centre Kurt Sutcliffe had almost got over as the home side put together some excellent moves. Each time they kept the ball alive and it eventually came out for No8 Lance Hamilton to power over to make it 17 - 0 at half-time.

Half Time Rishworthians 17 - 0 Hessle

It looked as if Rishworthians had the game sewn up, but early in the second half poor tackling allowed Hessle lock Lee Evans to score a converted try. He was there again minutes later to take a pass and score again, easily bursting through some weak Rishworthian tackling.

The home side came back and fullback Nick Faulkner burst through to almost put replacement wing Joe Milner in at the corner, only a last ditch tackle denying him. They breathed a sigh of relief however when Billing added three points from a penalty.

Straight from the restart a kick was charged down and Hessle scored. The conversion took it to 20 - 19 and the visitors added a penalty to take the lead.

Rishworthians' spirit was not dented, however and they fought back. Prop Phil Kershaw drove for the line. The rest of the pack forced him over and Faulkner joined in to touch down. Billing added the conversion.

At 27 - 22 there was still time for Hessle to fight back and score thanks to poor marking and tackling. Rishworthians thought they had lost it, but with the last act of the game Ash Chapman's seemingly easy conversion attempt hit the post.
