“ WELWYN RFC 31pts --- VERULAMIANS RFC 29 pts
A very close game, a game of halves with Welwyn deserving their half time lead of 21 – 10 and Vees storming back in the second half to cause a nail – biting finish that could have gone the other way had there been another five additional minutes of extra time.
On an overcast, yet dry afternoon Welwyn RFC started off with the greater resolve and scored a goal far out after just five minutes to make it 7 – 0 and followed by further applied forward pressure after 15 minutes with another to ratchet the score up to 14 – 0. Then after some middle of the field aggressive tackling from both sides Vees wing forward Billy Sach broke free and with an inside pass to Ben Russell enabled him to score a goal near the posts to reduce the difference to 14 – 7. Close to half time after some more Welwyn RFC forward pressure the home side gained a controversial penalty try to stretch their lead to 21 – 7, only to see that eroded by a foolish offside that let Alex Ricci make it 21 – 10.
So Welwyn after territorially dominating the first half they then proceeded in the same manner and scored a well engineered try down the right wing, which their on song kicker converted from far out to make what appeared to be an unassailable 28 –10 margin. Vees then suddenly sprung to life and the robust Sam Crowne, new young talentd second – row addition Charlie Deacon, Ben Russell, Joe Baker and Darren Westhead began to impose such pressure on the Welwyn defence that Jake Lawrence soon went over in the corner to create 28 – 15 only to see this extended by an unnecessary Vees penalty to 31 – 15. Vees annoyed by this lapse piled on the running game that had become their trademark prior to Christmas and scored two beautifully fashioned, unfortunately unconverted tries to bring the score to 31 – 29 with five minutes to go. Welwyn somehow held out with a ‘ handbag ‘ incident that saw a player from both sides yellow – carded. “
