“ Verulamians RFC 17 pts – Cheshunt RFC 15 pts
After losing four matches in a row it was pleasing to record a victory over our old adversaries Cheshunt RFC. A nail – biting close game it was, only settled with a well taken Alex Ricci penalty some eight minutes from the final whistle. Once again injuries called upon 2nd XV reserves to plug the holes and Darren Westhead and Tim Fretter proved they were up for the task. It has to be said that Cheshunt RFC played as a team, whereas the Vees too often rested on the individual brilliance of individuals to rescue situations that would not have occurred in the first half of then promising season. Set pieces in the scrums and lineouts were even between the sides, but it was in open play that costly mistakes occurred and caused good centre attacking positions to be reversed, so that Vees were defending too much.
Vees in the opening 20 mins gradually gained territorial advantage and in the 35th minute Alex Ricci on one of his weaving runs, rounded two of the Cheshunt defence, fed the ball to George Irwin who sped over for a try from 30 mtrs out which Gareth Walters converted. So the Half time score should have been 7 – 0, but a lapse of concentration in the centre of the pitch enabled their centre to score under the posts for it to be 7 – 7. But then another open play error credited the opposition with another try to make it 7 – 12. Fortunately their kicker missed when he hit the post.
With the slope and slight wind in Vees favour in the second half Vees through determined runs by Tim Fretter and Josh Goddard fed Joe Seymour, who shrugged off a strong tackle and fed George Irwin to score another converted try to make the score 14 – 12. However this lead was again wasted by an unnecessary penalty right in front of Vee’s posts and Cheshunt then led 15 – 14 until Alex Ricci stepped up to the plate to slot the narrow Vees victory “.
