“ Cheshunt RFC 29 pts --- Verulamians RFC 25 pts
This turned out to be a closely contested game with Cheshunt RFC wanting victory more eagerly in the final quarter than Vees.
Unable to play on the home Club’s very level table due to their new Pavilion and RFU sponsored G4 artificial pitch being in the final throws of construction, Vees lost the toss and were forced to play downhill in the first half, knowing that the second half was likely to be an up hill struggle. So it turned out to be as they only went in at half time with a 17 – 10 lead. This had been gained by an early excellent try from Crick Gillespie that was converted by Full Back Alex Ricci. However Cheshunt replied shortly afterwards with an unconverted try of their own and very soon added another to which Alex Ricci replied with a penalty that was then added to by Crick Gillespie getting his brace. This again was converted by Ricci.
Vees who are still struggling with nine long term injuries to key players then were faced with a daunting defensive second half playing up hill. It soon became apparent that a battle to maintain the slim half time advantage was going to be challenged by an eager opposition pack intent of asserting themselves in the set pieces. Cheshunt soon scored another unconverted try to narrow the gap. Stuart Patterson for Vees, then against the run of play, crossed the line to stretch Vees lead to 22 – 15 and Ricci added another penalty to create a possible winning lead of 25 – 15.
But to their credit Cheshunt rebounded and in the final 15 minutes stuck in another two goals to win the match 29 – 25, with Vees pleased to gain a point by only loosing by four points.
Vees are away at bottom of the League Hitchin RFC on Sat 4th November KO 2.30 pm when the addition of some key returning players should bolster the side. “
