Narrow victory but still keeps us 4 points clear at the top.
“ Hitchin RFC 20 pts – Verulamians RFC
The result of this game was in doubt until the final ten minutes when Vees Sam Allen slotted over the winning penalty. Until then and particularly in the first half Hitchin took the fight to the Vees and denied them both possession and territorial advantage. Had it not been for Vees resolute defence Vees would have faced a far larger points deficit at half time than 12 – 7. It appeared Hitchin would have ended the half 12 – 0 up had it not been for one of fly – half Sam Allen’s electric bursts of speed accompanied by an enormous inside break from 40 metres out to end up under the posts.
The second half required more of the same grit from the whole fifteen team members to gradually turn the game round and create penalty kick chances that were gladly accepted by Sam Allen. The score became 12 – 10 and then Hitchin put on some sustained forward pressure which resulted in a maul and drive over Vees line to give them an ominous 17 – 10 advantage with some 20 minutes to got.
Then out of the blue Vees backs created a fast flowing mid - field move which resulted with Sam Allan flicking the ball inside which Chris Gillespie gratefully accepted and tore in under the posts for an equalising goal.
Shortly after this a fracas occurred resulting in two Hitchin and one Vees player leaving the field. Hitchin then gave away another penalty which Sam Allen converted to make it 17 – 20. Now with only 15 mins remaining the game for the spectators became nail – biting and with Vees pressing hard enabled Sam Allen again to slot another penalty to draw level at 20 – 20. The error rate then increased by both sides, but Vees weathered the storm and Sam Allen yet again centred 3pts between the uprights to give Verulamians a relief – filled away VICTORY.”
