Friday 20th January, saw 30 excited pupils from Park Street and Bowmansgreen Primary Schools take part in an energising afternoon of Tag Rugby, as part of the AVIVA Premiership Rugby Schools Programme alongside Saracens Rugby Club.
Pupils practiced their tag rugby skills, alongside the Verulamian Rugby Club and Saracens community team coaches, before competing in small teams for the title of Year 4 Tag Rugby Champions for London Colney. With the extra practice sessions before the competition, the skills shown throughout the matches were of a great standard.
Park Street’s Blue Team claimed the Victory with a brilliant 13 tries, scored over five matches.
The tag festival also marked the 2000th pupil to be engaged by Saracens and the AVIVA Schools Tag Rugby Programme since September.
Saracens visit to Park Street Primary had a great influence on one youngster named Zachary. The visit inspire him and his whole family to attend Saracens vs. London Irish, back in December; further inspiring himself and his brother to attend the Saracens Rugby Camps over Christmas.
His parents said: “We really enjoyed our first rugby match as a family and Zachary loved his try of rugby at Park Street School. He and his brother attended a two day camp with Saracens later in December and are now deciding whether to play football or rugby for England!”
Caroline Connell; Saracens community coach said: “We have run this project throughout North London and the Hertfordshire area and today we have had 30 pupils at their local rugby club (Verulamians RFC) learning new skills and building awareness of their local club”. She said: “Pupils have also taken time out of their weekend to come down to their local clubs to play which is the overall aim of the programme, and with the assistance from the AVIVA Programme, making it a great success”.
Andy Clifford from Verulamians Rugby Club said: “We have linked up with this programme because, anything that we can do to get more numbers into junior rugby, we will do. Having Saracens go into schools and rugby clubs along with the premiership trophy is hugely beneficial. Children like winning teams, Saracens are a winning team and their presence will really help drive youngsters to the sport”.
