“ Verulamians RFC 29 pts --- Datchworth RFC 22pts
This turned out to be a game of two halves and Datchworth with their much more organised, forceful front eight swiftly ran in an unconverted try within five minutes of the start. They then proceeded to torment Vees territorially so much so that the 200 + spectators feared there would be an avalanche of points. But Vees defensive, sometime last ditch tackling kept them at bay and although they scored another converted try in the corner, Vee’s ever – threatening, strong running Joe Seymour managed to breach Datchworth’s back division to enable Alex Ricci to convert and make the half time score a respectable 7 – 12. Mind you Datchworth’s place kicker then missed a crucial penalty right in front of Vees posts, but made amends after the break and put their winger away to stretch their lead to 7 – 17.
Vees forwards who had absorbed a great deal of punishment then found their second wind and gradually won more second phase ball to enable Vees backs to show their running potential. This then prompted an inspired Alex Ricci to take the stage and produce a brace of jinxing runs that drew much applause when he crossed the line. He converted both and added another penalty to give Vees a second half warranted victory of 29 - 22 and end their season on a high note.”
