Disappointing result but stay top on points difference.
“ Verulamians RFC 8 pts --- WELWYN RFC 46 pts
This was a surprise defeat – certainly the extent and conclusiveness of it. Welwyn RFC certainly deserved the victory, though Vees never gave up the fight and reaped a well executed try by Micky Seymour 10 minutes from the end.
However for the rest of the match Welwyn RFC were in command for large swathes of the match, out – gunning Vees in the forwards and latching on to forced errors, which they mercilessly punished. At half time they were 3 –27 in the lead and continued in the second half with venomous forward play aided and abetted by some puzzling referee decisions to produce the final whistle scoreline of 6 - 46.
But although Welwyn achieved the victory Vees are still at the top of London NW3 on mere points difference. It will be time for reflection in the Vee camp and the team management will have to look at the game and see where they can improve. This will be very important at this stage of the season as Vees have now lost the use of two stalwarts Sam Allen and Michael Hollister who have gone abroad. Strength in depth remains but injuries are causing selection problems. There are areas to work on before Vees resume their quest in two weeks time away at Finchley. This will be another step up to determine whether or not the team will be promotion contenders by April.”
