Leeds Corinthians crowned 2014 Champions

Well done to Leeds Corinthians who won three tight battles to take the trophy. They found a way to win all three of their fixtures making them deserved champions.

Leeds opened up the tournament winning 5-3 against Ossett with an interception try in the 2nd half deciding it. They out muscled the favourites, Stocksbridge, to win 7-3 with an impressive display of counter rucking that disrupted Stocksbridge at crucial times. Knaresborough started strongly against Corinthians with an early try, however Corinthians responded strongly to win 12-10.

Player of the tournament was between all the open sides in all 4 teams with the referees deciding that Pete Newton from Stocksbridge was the stand out player.

Thanks to Ossett Brewery for sponsoring the tournament. Thanks to the referees (Tony Smith and Steve Richings) who were excellent. Finally, thanks to all 4 teams who played out a competitive tournament in good spirits and hanged around in the club house for a few beers after.

Ossettt 3 5 Corinthians

Ossett 7 3 Knares

Ossett Report

Tries: Webber

Player of the year Points
5 = Duncan
4 = Jennings
3 = Bonner
2 = Webber
1 = Wray & Lazenby

A frustrating day on the field at times as we failed to take our chances and convert line breaks into tries. Webber, Wray and Jennings got over the advantage line many times but we were often turned over or slowed down. With 5 subs in the pack there was a lot of chopping and changing and the pack never really clicked. However the torunament was about giving everyone a start and a run out and it served its purpose.

Some of the lineout options and set plays worked very well and was pleasing. Webber scored an excellent try after great work from Lister, Hall and Blackburn who made the initial burst. What we need to work on is clearing the ruck and gaining quicker ball.

Dissapointing not to retain the cup, but much to be pleased about and a focus on where we have to improve.
