Ossett came out of the blocks flying and produced their best 20 mins of rugby of the season to open up a 19-0 lead. Danny Bonner picked up the pace of the game and Rods struggled to live with quick ruck ball and speed of attack.

The opening score came after Richard Lister crashed through a gap and took the ball on to the 5 metre line. Quick recycling allowed Peat to pick and cross the line untouched.

The second try came from Jack Drury after the Rods winger was caught offside chasing a kick. Drury got the ball at the mark and tapped with the Rods defence not set. With the covering defence coming across he dummied and stepped his man on the inside to finish a good opportunist’s try.

The third came from a clinical catch and drive from 10 yards out. Three times Rods held the drive up but great communication from Danny Bonner and Joe Rotchel allowed the pack to roll off and eventually Gary Heywood dropped over the line to make it 19-0 after only 20 mins.

At this point our inexperience showed and a lack of composure and game management allowed Rods into the match. Joe, Jack and myself need to take our fair share of the blame for this as we were guilty over confidence. Game management will not be right every week and we need to learn from these mistakes. When we have a team down, we need to keep them down and we allowed them back in. As Dyksey said, we should have piled the pressure on and forced Rods to play out of their own half. The optimism and confidence running through the team after the first 20 mins meant that we tried to play too much rugby in our own half and try things that just weren’t on.

From a speculative chip over on the half way line, the Rods defender charged down and scored from the resulting attack. A penalty was added and then a further try was taken as the Ossett defence fell asleep and allowed Rods to run at us with their prop crashing over from 5 yards. Fair play to Rods who always provide stubborn resistance and never gave up.

Into the second half and Ossett started brightly. Bonner fizzed a pass out to Lazenby who beat three defenders on the outside with a burst of pace to score in the corner. Drury converted off the post.

The next incident sealed Rods fate as their number 8 was given a red card for punching. Some refs may have only given it a yellow but he threw three uppercuts to a player without retaliation so was always going to be in a spot of bother. From the resulting penalty Joe Rotchel crashed over but inexplicably the referee gave a knock on. A few shouts from Rods players and spectators may have put pressure on him but I had clear vision and it was a try. The referee was pretty good today – best of the season so far in my book and allowed play to flow – however he got this call wrong.

The rest of the match was a scrappy affair with Ossett misfiring and producing some pretty dire stuff as we tried to force the game. Handling errors were rife and the game fizzled out into a miserable last 20 mins for players and spectators alike.

Having said that - mission accomplished – a bonus point win and some signs of the team playing a style of rugby we want to play.

Against teams higher up in the table we will need to be more clinical. Too many overlaps went begging as the forwards kept it tight when it should have gone wide and the backs didn’t execute the overlaps that were on at times. Bit too flat at times. Lazenby crashed onto a flat pass form Bonner to score his try and demonstrated the need to play with depth. Again, the lineout was top notch with Dent and Peat forming a good partnership.

Big week next week with Knaresborough coming to Ossett. A win should put us up in the top 3 or 4. Its shaping up to look like Medics, Hgte, Govs and Hemsworth may be the teams to beat this year. We need to stay in contention.

We welcome the return of Rob Young from New Zealand and Mark Ward from injury. We also welcome new signing Kryss Tominay who I taught at Mirfield who is a very exciting addition to the side. This may allow the transition of Webbo to flanker which will give the back row a new dimension.
