Report by Webber

After a good turnout at training, Ossett felt confident and well prepared for the tough encounter against Mosborough in the last game of the season. Ossett beat Mosborough at home in the first game of the season and were hoping for more of the same, but they had won three on the bounce and had a big crowd out watching.

After losing the coin toss Mosborough made the tactical decision to go uphill in the first half. Tim Roberts got the game underway and with the home side keen to impress their large crowd Mosborough soon found themselves over Ossett’s try line with a driving maul which left the Ossett players scratching their heads.

Roberts kicked back off deep into their corner with good strong defence by the Ossett forwards. Mosborough chanced their arm in the backs by getting the ball wide to the winger who cut back inside and broke clear, racing 40 meters. A good cover tackle by Jack Drury in Ossett’s 22 stopped a certain try. This is where Ossett found themselves for the next 20 minutes, losing what little possession they had due to good Mosborough turnovers. Ossett were frustrated and the overzealous referee awarded Mosborough a penalty for an apparent high tackle on Mosborough 10. Mosborough converted taking the lead to 8-0.

Ossett finally gained composure, thanks to good drives from Burnley, Duncan and Young and found themselves on Mosborough’s five meter line for the first time in the game. With good distribution from Drury to Jonny Karadzic a two on one overlap formed with Webber sneaking into the corner for a try. Roberts was unlucky as the ball just drifted into, and hit, the post in what was an excellent attempt from the touch line.

Frustrated by Ossett’s turn of fortune, Mosborough proceeded to give away three penalties. Tim Roberts converting them all to keep Ossett in the game. Mosborough hit back with a try just before half time, taking the score to 13-14 in favour of Ossett.

Ossett started the second half the better of the two teams. With good hands from Matt Hemmingway who found Roberts, who then proceeded to put Lightfoot into space. True to his name, he was light on his feet racing 50 meters drawing the fullback, who then passed to JK who put Rob Young over the line for a well worked try – Roberts converting.

However, the celebrations were short lived as the large crowd, celebrating St George’s Day with a gala, really got behind the home side who had the majority of the possession in the second half, resulting in three unanswered tries, all scored by rolling mauls.

Ossett managed to get the ball to the backs in the dying minutes. Who with another well worked try saw Ollie Lightfoot go over in the corner, taking the game to 32-29.

Sadly, it was a little too late for Ossett, and Mosborough just pinched the spoils. Ossett finished the season in a respectable mid-table position.
