Ossett 31 Vs 10 Bramley
Bonus Point Win for Ossett
A much-changed Bramley side to the team we played at Bramley arrived for the return leg. The game played at our Sowood bends pitch due to Southdale still being unplayable due to standing water that’s getting further infield. Gareth Lewis made a much-welcomed return to the field along with Tim Roberts and Jack Drury.
Ossett started brightly with strong forward play opening a gap for the back line to exploit and the ball working across the field to Jim Edginton to score in the corner. The conversion was converted by Drury from the touch line. With Ossett receiving the kick off the forwards worked their patterns with Mark Stuart once again leading from the front, with Paul Westerman hot on his heels, worked their way up to 10 metres from the Bramley line. A knock on saw a Bramley win a scrum and managed to win their ball back only for a sliced clearance kick to hit Chris White square in the chest and bounce back towards the Bramley line where Edginton pounced to score his second try of the game.
The Bramley set piece struggled all day with Chris White and Mark Stuart either winning or disrupting the Bramley line out or Rob Young winning the ball against the head in the scrum. This created more chances for Ossett to put into practice what happens on the training field and it worked well, keeping the visitors penned back and not giving them room to work. The backs stopped the strong running centre in this tracks and turned the ball over. This caused Bramley to change tactic and try keep the ball tight to the ruck, this played into Ossetts hands quite well as the forwards rebuffed every attack. Ossett gave the visitors little chance to get near the Ossett line, just like the week before. Bramley’s first points came from a penalty on the 22-metre line which the promising Bramley fullback converted with ease. Ossett weren’t done this half though and managed to get another score when Jason Kay was on the end of a cross field move to score. Ossett lead 19 – 3 at half time.
At the break, Jonny Karadzic was substituted for Adam Race who joined in the disruption of the Bramley lineout and made good runs and defensive tackles. Bramley scored quickly off the restart when the fullback ran around numerous Ossett players to score under the sticks. He may have been taken for a walk by Gareth Lewis in a tackle attempt but he couldn’t half run! The introduction of Nathan Spurr at half time also proved decisive with strong running and some deft offloads in the tackle saw Bramley struggle to contain him all game. Danny Buckley put in a man of the match performance, always present at the ruck and not afraid to take a ball in and his rugby league skills see him run into gaps the opposition leave around the edge of the ruck.
It wouldn’t be a proper game until someone scored off the back of a lineout and Ossett did just that with veteran Ian Whitehead, who played at prop for his time on the field, at the back of the Ossett maul going over for the try which was converted by Drury. The last score of the game came when the ball worked its way to Dale Burnley who managed to force his way over.
An excellent team performance saw Ossett get a bonus point win over a tough Bramley team. Next week is Hornsea away in the league.
