Ossett 1st XV laid rest to last year’s ghosts with one of the wins of the season last Saturday.
In a performance sure to get all teams reevaluating their chances, Ossett fielded the full 18 to maximum effect and clinched a thrilling last minute victory.
Ossett had a nervous start though at Medics. Slick passing and missed one-on-one tackles in Ossett’s midfield let in an early first try for the home side.
Ossett closed the Gap through the boot of Drury Jnr. after an organised forward drive forced a penalty from Medics upfront. Fears for Ossett’s pack however were sparked as Dent was binned for a cut to the head.
An energetic performance from replacement, Garth Burley, kept Ossett’s continuity afloat. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to halt the Medics charge as the favourites went in under the sticks before half time.
Half time score: 10-3.
Ossett regrouped in the break and came out more focussed, holding Sheffield Medics to deadlock. Last ditch tackling denied the leaders a runaway score.
Who do you think you are? Superstar, Nathan Spurr, put a bone-rattler on the opposition’s No.8 to reinvigorate the Ossett pack and instil some much needed aggression in their game.
Fightback. Ossett continued to mount pressure on the medics defence. Two became one as flyhalf, Andy Bell, and Man of the Match, Steve Dykes, combined to put the big No.8 over the line. Dykes led the charge, not only in the pack, but cutting some good ad hoc runs off Bell.
Sheffield responded strongly to keep the lead with another charging forward run from close in. But Ossett were reinvigorated by further substitutions in the backs and growing determination in the pack.
Sustained pressure put a determined Spurr over the line, five minutes before the end of the game, giving Ossett the lead for the first time.
Despite a slow start, missing equipment and a coaching team lost on Sheffield ring road, Ossett were able to cling on to the lead and secure one of the wins of the season.
The win means Ossett move up to second in the league.
