With 3 first XV pack members unavailable, Ossett may have thought to themselves that securing possession may prove difficult. However, the home eight started well and in scrum, lineout and open play dominated their South Yorkshire opposition. Fenton especially impressing in his first start on the flank with some forceful running. Ossett ran the ball at every opportunity, forwards and backs linking well and after 20 minutes, following another strong run from Fenton, a deft kick from stand off Andy Bell enabled winger Jack Peat to gather and force his way over, Drury missing the extras. Ossett continued to pressure and with Oaks killing the ball on a regular basis the home side were able to increase their lead with 2 Jack Drury penalties. The home side continued to attack with strong runs from lock Nathan Spurr and No 8 Tom Sprott making inroads with some superb angled runs. With 5 minutes remaining in the half a long raking kick from Bell and the ensuing pressure meant the Sheffield full back could not clear beyond his 22. From the line out skipper Clinton North caught and the forwards rumbled towards the line with Sprott barging his way over for a deserved try, 16-0 at the half. Ossett started the second half as they finished the first, playing attacking rugby and trying to use their pacy backs. However, credit must go to the Sheffield side as they managed to stop the home side adding to their first half tally with some last ditch tackling, notably Peat being just bundled out of play in the corner. Nevertheless, they continued to infringe by trying to slow the ball down and centre Drury increased the lead to 19-0 with a successful penalty. The scoring was completed when the Ossett pack secured quick ball and Bell hit Mark Webster with a superb flat pass enabling him to scorch between his centre and the winger to score beside the posts, Drury stroking over the conversion to give a final score of 26-0. Although this was a pleasing victory with the opposition not even coming close to the home line, Ossett must strive to press home their advantage and score more heavily. Notable performances came from scrum half Danny Bonner, forwards Nathan Spurr and Tom Sprott but the man of the match performance coming from flanker Lee Fenton. Next Saturday sees the visit of Stocksbridge, who are also languishing at the lower end of the league. With players returning Ossett must look for a convincing win to increase their points difference as this may be crucial at the end of the season.
