Ossett lost this rearranged game in controversial circumstances when the referee chose to abandon the game with Ossett poised to take a scrum on their opponents' five-metre line. The decision followed a clash between both teams which saw players from each side sent off.
Prior to that rugby had been the winner in a tightly contested game which saw both sides have periods of ascendancy. In scoreboard terms, Otliensians took the early lead through two penalties which were improved when they scored a converted try. Ossett needed to score next and a period of pressure eventually paid dividends when good handling from the backs saw full-back Ben Lunt score a try which was well converted by James Wood.
The second half saw Ossett continue to dominate with Connor Stevenson and Dale Burnley making the hard yards and with standoff Shaun Abson varying his game goods hands from Tom Rogers and Adam Masson saw Ben Lunt cross for his second try, again well converted by James Wood for Ossett to lead 14-13.
However, with the referee making some controversial calls, Otliensians converted a long-range penalty to lead 16-14 and so it stayed despite the promptings of Captain Danny Buckley and although Ossett gained a losing bonus point there was frustration in the way the game ended.
Meanwhile, Ossett 2nds lost on the road at Barnsley in a friendly 39-21. Both teams have a stern challenge next week with the first facing Rotherham Phoenix at home and the seconds away at Cleckheaton in their merit league.
