Since their victory over Team Hodgey, a select team of South Africans, in the final of the inaugural ‘Lastmanstands’ Johnny Hodge Memorial Cup, back in August, the Yorkshire Puddings have taken a deserved break from cricketing pursuits. However, two months off is enough for any man, and the squad of ten are now hard at it preparing for a crack at the world championships on Springbok home territory.
The South Africa hosted Last Man Stands, World Champs tournament runs from the 31st of March to 7th of April 2012, at the Newlands Stadium, home of Western Province Cricket Club in Capetown. By the way none too far from the famous Garden Route, for any wine loving supporters who may need that extra nudge. Plus the prize for winning the main event is US$ 10,000 or £ 6,391 and 82p in real money!
Yorkshire Puddings’ squad is made up of current Ossett players: first team captain Mike Edwards, Charlie Orme, Karl Anderson, Chris Day and Tom Finnigan along with former players John Sadler, Joe Finnigan, Alex Mumford plus Methley wicketkeeper Chris Holiday. Chris represented Ossett in last years Central Yorkshire Cricket League 20/20, as did all the other team members heading due south.
Last Man Stands is billed as the widest reaching amateur cricket league in the world, spread across five countries and 30 different cities, with over 20 000 registered players all competing together. An outdoor 8-a-side T20 cricket game that lasts +/- 2 hours with 5-ball overs, in which all 8 wickets are needed to bowl a cricket team out, and when the seventh wicket falls, the Last Man Stands alone! There are however a few more rules to the game than the above, so if you would like to know more follow the YouTube link below:
