Steve Ridley reflects on reaching the First Round of the FA Cup earlier in his career

This seasons cup run has been great to this point, I have made it to the first round proper earlier in my career, at Barrow we fell 3-2 to Bristol Rovers but were very unlucky to not get a replay or even win it on the day – it was the first game to be shown on Match of the Day that Saturday night too.

When I played in this round for Buxton, in the same side as Grant Black we took on Telford. We drew 2-2 at home and went 1-0 up early in the replay. After 35 minutes we had a player sent off, Gregg Anderson, as he conceded a penalty which Teford equalised from. With half an hour to go we were reduced to nine men but held on to force extra time.

Telford scored to go 2-1 up but we kept pushing, even with two men down. We got a corner in the last minute, our keeper came up, I wiped it over and we scored, what a feeling. Then to cap it off we won the game on penalties! It would be great to experience that again, but perhaps without sending’s off!
