West Riding County Cup, First Round Tuesday 10 October, 7:45pm

I want the lads who play against Campion to show us what they can do
- Grant Black

Ossett Town host Campion in the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday evening, Campion are third in the NCEL First Division and come into this game on the back of a 3-0 victory at Nostell Miners Welfare at the weekend.

Grant Black will be taking the opportunity to rest some weary legs in the County Cup on Tuesday evening, which will give an opportunity to players who have not had much game time due to the good recent form.

“I want the lads who play against Campion to show us what they can do” says Black “I want to see them pushing and putting their hands up to be picked again. We have injuries ahead of the weekend so players used tomorrow will be looking to get into the side for the game against Solihull Moors”.

“We are looking to do well in this competition, like all of them, but it is no secret that we will be using this game to give time to players who need it”.

The West Riding County Cup came into being in 1927, the first winners were Leeds United Reserves, in the early days many reserve sides competed in this competition and was won by Bradford City and Huddersfield Town’s second sides too.

Entry to the competition is by invite from the Council or an authorised committee assigned to run the competition.

Ossett Town first won the competition in 1959 and then had to wait a further 23 years to collect a second trophy in 1982 – so we are well over due our third success!

Goole Town with 13 victories and Farsley Celtic (10) are the most successful clubs in the competition history. Farsley’s penultimate victory, in 2001, was heart-breaking for Ossett Town supporters and came back into memory as last season’s Evo-Stik North Play-Off Final unfolded.

With the clock ticking down at County HQ in Woodlesford Ossett Town player/manager Gary Brook opened the scoring in the last minute only for seconds after the restart Town’s young centre back, Paul Ryan, to concede a penalty giving Farsley the chance to equalise.

The Town players were clearly deflated and Farsley, added a further two in extra time before Chris Annan pulled one back for Town, a grandstand finish but no fairytail for Town as The Celts held on to lift the trophy after a 3-2 victory.

Ossett Town reached the Semi Final in the 12/13 season after victories over Wakefeld, Goole and Knaresborough. A home game against FC Halifax, who that season won promotion to the National League was the end of the road thanks to a 1-0 defeat. But the result does not tell the full story.

Ossett Town were on top for much of the game but trailed to a 25th minute goal by Alex Johnson. Jimmy Eyles was thwarted a number of times by the Halifax keeper and with 30 mintes remaining The Reds had a great chance as Eyles was felled in the box. The usually reliable Anthony Lloyd stepped up but blazed the ball over the bar.

Halifax reached the final, but were ultimately beaten by Guisley in the final at Valley Parade.

The Ossett Town team that day was: Matt Convey, Anthony Lloyd, Mark Whitehouse, Danny Patterson, James Cotterill (Carl Fothergill), Wes Milnes, Arran Hudson, Grant Darley, Carl Stewart (Josh Corbett), Simon Baldry, Keir Hannity (Jimmy Eyles) unused subs Peter Crook (GK)
