Brrrscough Freeze at the Touch of Frost
Match Report by Ralph Wainwright
New manager Grant Black made nine changes to the starting 11 from the midweek game v Darlington and with four players making their debuts Ossett Town were looking to stop a rot of nine consecutive league defeats the victory being Sept 19th 2015.
The Reds were first to attack when Alex Peterson sent Danny Frost away but the flag was up for offside. Burscough hit back with Liam Caddick and Jon Conway but Town cleared the danger.
A long pass from Towns Jack Wakefield found Peterson but again the flag went up for offside.
Nick Wood was booked for conceding a free kick 30 yards out and from the resulting kick Burscough appealed for a penalty but the referee waved away the claims.
On 16 minutes Town conceded a sloppy goal, Jack Wakefield fouled Will Jones 20 yards out, Paul Williams took the kick and Chris Backhouse in goal about to catch the ball unfortunately let it slip through his hands and into the net.
Alex Peterson was booked for Town for entering the field of play after receiving treatment when it seemed clearly the linesman gave permission for him to come on.
Caddick beat Towns Brad Kilner out wide and his cross was cleared for a corner, from it Chris Backhouse gathered after a goalmouth scramble.
After 37 minutes Burscough conceded a corner and Nick Wood limped off to be replaced by Isaac Assenso, David Brown took the corner and from close in Danny Frost turned and hammered the ball home to make it 1-1.
The 2nd half started with Danny Frost trying to add to his tally but saw his shot go well wide of goal.
Burscough had 2 free kicks from the dangerous Paul Williams but Town held out and cleared.
Town themselves had a penalty appeal turned down when Nick Ryan blocked a Danny Frost cross for a corner, Joe Camozzi then brought down Steve Ridley but the referee gave a goal kick.
On 63 minutes Town took the lead, a long ball to Peterson was played on to Frost who seemed certain to score but as his shot was well saved by Calvin Hare in goal, the rebound came back out to Alex Peterson who made no mistake to make it 2-1.
The goal shook Burscough who then made 3 substitutions and tested Towns defence but Jack Wakefield and Isaac Assenso were solid at the back.
Town brought on Moore for Peterson and Jack Siddall making his debut for Danny Frost as they looked to increase their lead, Brown had a shot deflected for a corner and Josh Moore had a header cleared.
In the last minute Burscough had two corners, as Backhouse punched clear David Brown raced clear and was brought down by substitute Joe Whittington who received a booking.
The referee somehow found 5 minutes to add on to the 90 but the Reds held on for a well deserved lead.
This was a gritty and determined display by Town against a team who are playing for a play off position, next up Lancaster at home.
