This week Otley have their furthest trip of the season down to a team we have never played before in the league – Ampthill and District.

Ampthill and District hail from the county of Bedfordshire not far from Milton Keynes. You may wonder why we have to travel so far. Well, following a near perfect season last time out they nearly promoted into National 1 last season in the play off game against Darlington Mowden Park. They were leading in injury time at the end of extra time, but a 108th minute dash by DMP’s Zylon McGaffin thwarted their ambitions. With two southern clubs coming back into National Two South, it meant the most northerly in that structure (Ampthill) had to don flat caps before heading North. It also meant they are not travelling as far and the number of their overnight stays (remember those) reduces from four to two.

And they do seem to have acclimatized - although lying second in the league they have the best figures both in attack and defence in the league – scoring an average of some 39 points per game while only conceding 11 per game. However, they have not had it all their own way and while they beat league leaders Hull Ionians at home, they were beaten by Chester away.

Most pundits have this down as a home win, and it is fair to say that we are going to have to be ‘up to mark’ if we are going to compete let alone pull off a shock. Nevertheless we have had some good wins this season and there is no reason why this Saturday cannot see a first in two senses of the word!

Leave the Motorway at Junction 13. Take the second exit off the roundabout and keep in the right lane. Turn right at the lights onto the A507 Ridgmont bypass for Millbrook, Ampthill, and Flitwick. Go past the Amazon Warehouse on your left, across the bridge over the railway line and go straight over the next two roundabouts.
Stay on the A507, go straight over the next roundabout for Millbrook and Centre Parcs and then take the first left turn for Ampthill (B530, Woburn St.). Ampthill Park is on the left, with the Rugby Club 300 yards down on the right.
