Entertaining Benllech in a Division Three (north) fixture, the match was thrown into doubt following the sad death of one of the visiting team’s elder players in midweek.

Only 12 were able to travel to Montgomeryshire, meaning Welshpool had an immediate three-man advantage and certain victory.

But rather than rub their hands at the prospect of a try-fest and dozens of points, the Welshpool lads decided to extend a helping hand and loaned three of their own players to make it even.

“We respected their committee’s decision to fulfil the fixture by helping them out, it was the least we could do. But it looked like backfiring at half time!” said coach Dai Roberts.

The game was played in fantastic spirit but the makeshift visitors were 8-7 up at the break. But the second half saw Welshpool lift the tempo and come home 33-8 winners. Andrew Thomas, Jack Brady, Rhys Williams, Tom Davies and Ryan Goodwin all scored tries with Thomas adding three conversions.

The points went Welshpool’s way but the real winner was the club’s reputation.
