Chief executive Roger Lewis says the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) new chairman will receive his full support.

Former national team captain David Pickering's 11-year tenure as chairman of the Union will officially come to an end on Tuesday.

A new chairman will be elected during a meeting of board members at the Millennium Stadium on Tuesday evening.

"Whoever the board elects I will give my 100% my total support," Lewis said.

"Because not only have they been elected by the board but they've got on that position by the member clubs.

"One has to respect the office of the chairman, one has to respect the board but most importantly one has to respect the wishes of the membership."

Pickering, capped 26 times by Wales, failed in his bid to be re-elected to the board of the WRU in September.

Pickering was seeking re-election for one of two available national appointed director posts.

Newport Gwent Dragons chief executive Gareth Davies and Llanelli head of rugby Anthony Buchanan won more votes than Pickering.

Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones said Davies has all the attributes for the role of WRU chairman.
