Surrey Ladies Hockey League: Premier Division
Oxted 1 v Wimbledon1A Home
1-2

From a good win against top of the table London Edwardians, last week, Oxted were hoping to capitalise on their 2nd place in the league table and have a strong performance against Wimbledon 1As at home, this weekend.
Oxted started brightly and managed to press Wimbledon tightly and create positive attacking chances for the first 20 minutes of the game. Oxted struggled to convert their positive play against a resolute Wimbledon defence, however, towards the end of the first half, they managed to score first after a well worked short corner. This involved a slick injection from Alex Chitty, crisp stop by Ellen Kourea and a shot slotted into goal by Mel Mercer. Oxted were pleased to go into half time with a 1-0 lead. Wimbledon came back fighting after half time, placing the Oxted defence under maximum pressure. Shortly into the half they scored to equalise. At 1-1, and weary from the attacking pressure, Oxted struggled to maintain possession, however, were hoping they could hold on for a 1-1 draw. Man of the match Ellie Hepburn, made some fantastic saves, keeping Oxted in the game. Unfortunately Oxted conceded a short corner in the last minutes of the game which Wimbledon scored from, resulting in a 1-2 loss for the home side. After a disappointing defeat, Oxted now sit 7th in the league table but are still only 3 points from the top spot and hope to bounce back in next week’s game against Guildford.
Oxted were determined to end the weekend on a positive note so put Saturday’s defeat behind them and drove over to Amersham and Chalfont for Sunday’s Investec England Hockey Vase game. Oxted once again enjoyed a strong start and had the majority of the possession during the game. Oxted earned a handful of short corners in the first half but were unlucky to convert them into a goal. The couple of break a ways by Amersham and Chalfont were dealt with by the tight Oxted defence of Gemma Chitty, Emily Chartres, Julia Axcell and Wendy Howell, while captain Lisa Nightingale and joint player of the match, helped control mid field. Despite this, the game remained goalless at half time. In the second half Oxted maintained their composure and Amelia Lewis worked hard up front, managing to slot home Oxted’s first goal of the match. Amersham and Chalfont managed to hold Oxted to one goal, however, Oxted managed to score a second, in the last play of the game, sealing victory, from a short corner, with forward Lauren Taylor-Moore diving to hit the ball into the back of the net.
A weekend of mixed results for Oxted but after a cup victory Oxted will come back fighting for next week’s league game against Guildford 2s.
