Oxted Mens 4s - Report
Date: Saturday 22nd October 2011 - Start Time: 10:30
Surrey Open - Premier
| Oxted Men's 4s | 1 | vs | 0 | Cheam Men's 2s |
Oxted 4s 1 v Cheam 2s 0
At the start of the season the plan was to aim mid table. The first challenge would be to gain 6 victories to ensure we can maintain a place in the Premier League. With 5 games now played and 4 wins under our belt the 4s can start to dream higher and on this performance push for a third promotion in 3 years!
Oxted went into the game keeping a strong squad with the inclusion of Stuart Brown and Peter Gee dropping down from the 3s.
The oppo turned up and it was clear from the start there plan was to intimmedate the team with there air of confidence and some very hard and late challenges, and for the first 10 minutes Oxted struggled against what was a very good Cheam side. However Oxted held strong and could cope with what was being thrown at them (most of which was ariels into the centre of the pitch). As Oxted found there feet the passing game began to take affect Oxted managed to keep the ball for long periods and was now making chances around the Cheam goal. Before long a goal mouth scramble saw the ball come out to Simon Willson (aka Weasel) to slot the ball past a stranded GK to make it 1-0. This goal seemed to strengthen Oxted's belief and for the remainder of the half Oxted manage to pen Cheam into there own half as Oxted players were coming from all angles peppering the Cheam defence, but no second goal came along before Half Time.
At half time the team were told by captain Ming to keep calm and not to react to physical aspects being deployed on them. The second half saw Oxted continue to press looking for a second goal with the midfield of Walshy, Weasel & Brownie all getting forward to assist the front line at any opportunities. Up front the tiring work from Bubbles, Guy and an impressive debut from Peter Gee was helping make chances and get the ball wide to Adam Pullen and Alex Treddinick whose pace was eating away at the Cheam defence. As the game went on Cheam were restricted to a few attacks one of which was a goalmouth scramble which saw Oxted GK Chris Bailey block Cheam on no more than 4 occassions. This along with the good positioning and marking of CB's Tom King and Josh Milne Oxted remained resilient. The final chance of the game went to skipper Ming who hit a rasping shot accross the goal from the right of the D, only to see the Cheam GK dive and deflect the ball onto the post and away. The final whistle went with the 4s picking up there 4th win of the season and there 3rd clean sheet in a row. After the game there was a smug and content feeling within the squad on another exceptonal performance which brings home dreams of another promotion IF we can keep up this form throughout the season!
